Labuan Bajo, located at the western tip of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, is one of Indonesia’s most famous tourist destinations. The town serves as the gateway to Komodo National Park, home to the unique Komodo dragons. In addition to its famous reptiles, Labuan Bajo attracts visitors with its stunning natural beauty, including beaches, small islands, and breathtaking underwater life.
A Brief History
Labuan Bajo was originally a small fishing village inhabited by the Bajo people, a community known for their exceptional seafaring skills. The name “Labuan Bajo” translates to “harbor of the Bajo people.” Over the years, the town has grown from a traditional fishing village into a premium tourist destination, especially after being designated as part of Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 1991.
Massive Development Under President Jokowi
Under the leadership of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Labuan Bajo has undergone significant development as part of the government’s initiative to establish it as one of Indonesia’s “10 New Balis.” The central government has invested heavily in infrastructure, such as expanding and modernizing Komodo Airport, which now accommodates both domestic and international flights. Additionally, roads, ports, and tourist facilities, including the Labuan Bajo Marina, have been upgraded to support the influx of visitors.
The government has also developed supporting infrastructure, such as the integrated tourism area in Golo Mori, designed to attract more high-end tourists. These projects aim not only to boost tourist arrivals but also to support the local economy through sustainable tourism.

The 2023 ASEAN Summit
Labuan Bajo further cemented its status as an international destination when it hosted the ASEAN Summit in May 2023. The event brought together leaders of ASEAN countries and drew global attention to the region’s tourism potential and ongoing developments. During the summit, the government used the opportunity to promote tourism and investment in Labuan Bajo, showcasing its readiness to become a world-class destination.
